The Unoffendable Heart: Week 1 Notes
WEEK 1: GUARD YOUR HEART
Proverbs 4:23 (KJV): "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."
I think we may live among the most offended, offensive, offendable generation of all time. I call them "soft". People have just gotten soft. I mean, you can't even make a Facebook post without hurting somebody's feelings. We are alive in the "everybody gets a trophy era”.
Since when did mistakenly calling someone "sir" or "ma'am" become so offensive? How dare we assume!
Road rage is at an all-time high. People are being attacked for being bad drivers.
Offense can only be TAKEN, it can not be GIVEN. People can be offensive, but it only affects you if you take offense to it.
Jesus was one of the most offensive humans to ever walk the Earth! and He still is!
Matthew 15:26- He called her a DOG!
Mark 8:23- Spit on his blind eyes.
Jesus told us this would happen.
Matthew 24:10, 12: "And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another... And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Matthew 11:4-6 Jesus said His works would offend many and those accepted Him would be blessed.
The world we live in today is different that His time on Earth, but the hate for Him hasn't changed. Christians are still thought to be a great threat. "Christian Nationalism" is said to be one of the top threats in our country. Wow!
Jesus told us what to do with those that oppose us:
Matthew 5:44 Pray for them. Forgive them.
Offense was the original sin of satan and of mankind. Satan thought that he was owed more, so he allowed offense and pride to take over.
"And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it."
Keep (Hebrew: shamar): to hedge about, to guard, to protect, to attend to. Adam and Eve were given a garden to tend AND to guard.
Genesis 3:1: The serpent got into the garden. The enemy didn't come in with an army; he came in with a conversation, a suggestion, a twist on what God said.
He said, "Hath God said?"- questioning the meaning and suggested that God was keeping something from them...sound familiar? Have you ever taken offense just because someone had something that you didn't?--Think back to your childhood :)
This is why we must guard our hearts.
Proverbs 4:23 (KJV): "Keep (Guard) thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."
Everything that flows out of your life flows out of your heart.
Matthew 12:34- ...out of the abundance of your heart, your mouth speaks.
If we don't keep offense from getting inside of us, it'll affect our words.
Proverbs 4:23 (KJV): "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."
