The Unoffendable Heart: Week 3 Notes

LOVE KEEPS NO RECORD

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 "Charity suffereth long, and is kind... is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil... Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth."

I love the Hayford Translation here:
- "Is not easily provoked"
- "isn't irritable or touchy". It's not looking for a reason to be offended
- "graceful under pressure".
-"Thinks no evil" (Greek: logizomai): to take inventory, to reckon, to count, to put on account. It's a bookkeeping word.  There's no log of a wrongdoing.
-"does not keep an account of wrongs done to it; instead it erases resentments". Like that big eraser from the beginning of the school year in Elementary.

God isn't asking us to do something He's not done.

Romans 4:8 Same word God uses for us: "Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute (logizomai) sin". Hebrews‬ ‭8‬:‭12‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, And their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” ‭‭
God doesn't keep a record on us, so we can't keep one on each other.

‭‭Mark‬ ‭11‬:‭25‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
Some of us keep everything on a file in our minds. We know exactly who owes us, how much, and since when.
We can recite the date, the words they said, and the look on their face.  The enemy loves to remind us and replay the video in our minds! And he will, if we allow him to.

God's kind of love doesn't keep that ledger. And when we guard our hearts according to the Word of God, we allow God to be our defender.

Think about Joseph in the Old Testament:
- Thrown in a pit and sold by his brothers, lied about by Potiphar's wife, forgotten in prison. He had every reason to carry offense.
- Genesis 50:20: "But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good."
- They "thought" (reckoned) evil. Joseph refused to keep the same books.
- An unoffendable heart puts Joseph in the position to save the very people who hurt him.

This is how Jesus says it in the New Testament:
Matthew 18:21-35: Peter asks, "How oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?" Jesus: "Until seventy times seven."
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬ ‭KJVAE‬‬ “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think (Greek: logizomai) on these things.” WOW! God wants us to forget and forgive the things done against us, but He's given us a way to do it! He wants us to take inventory of what He's done for us.

Has God graciously forgiven you? Freely we have received, so we will freely give!
